DIY: Faux White Jumper

Matching top and bottoms are a nice alternative to a jumpsuit and provide versatility for your wardrobe.

I LOOOOVE the month of May! It is my Birthday month, Mother's Day is in May, and the LILACS take the floral spotlight. Growing up in Canada, May was also the month when Winter truly seemed to hide its long dark presence and the promise of Spring was ever present.

When I made this white two piece jumper I knew the perfect backdrop for the pictures would be a lilac bush. I was delighted to find this patch of lilac bushes near my home but I had no idea that the flowers would put on such a show! Although this blog post is supposed to be about the jumper I made, let's face it, the lilacs are drool worthy and I'd be unfair if I didn't invite you to partake of the beauty of this early morning photo shoot!

As you imagine the overwhelmingly gorgeous scent of these delicate flowers, I'm going to attempt to address how I made this outfit. It really was quite simple and the two pieces are versatile separates or simply fun worn together for a casual Spring/Summer jumper look.

The pattern is loosely self drafted using three different patterns to guide me. One pattern was the bodice I wanted, the other pattern had the sleeves I wanted, and the bottoms came from a pattern for pajama pants that I altered.

To achieve the gaucho type pants you can use any pajama pant pattern that you like and about 4-5 inches from the waistband you'll draw a new line on the outside seam with the angle that you want to create the amount of flair you desire. Keep the inside seam original to the pattern you have chosen, then figure out the length you want and make your cut there, keeping enough for a hem. I kept the waist band elastic because the fabric is stretch bottom weight and I knew the top and tie would be covering the waistband. The top has just the perfect softness in the sleeve to keep it flowy for Spring/Summer weather and the waist tie provides shape and flatters the figure.

Cryptic instructions? Maybe this post really is more about the beauty of creation than it is about perfect instructions and can serve as wardrobe inspiration.

Stay tuned as I work on styling tips for the individual pieces of this faux jumper!!
